The Great Artists: The English Masters

The Great Artists: The English Masters is a documentary series that chronicles the lives, times and works of some of the English masters - Hogarth, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Blake, Turner and Constable. The series consists of six episodes, each of which highlights important events in each artist's life, explores their stylistic trademarks and provides detailed explanations of their techniques. The series also features the events which inspired the artists to create their work, providing a better understanding of the creative process.

Episode 1 - William Hogarth




Episode 1 - William Hogarth
William Hogarth (1697-1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. Hogarth depicted English society in a witty and brilliantly satirical way.

Episode 2 - Joshua Reynolds
Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) was an influential eighteenth-century English painter, specialising in portraits and promoting the "Grand Style" in painting which depended on idealization of the imperfect.

Episode 3 - Thomas Gainsborough
Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter. The Fancy Pictures created toward the end of his career were a result of combining landscape and portraiture, which are now seen by many as his greatest achievement.

Episode 4 - William Blake
William Blake (1757-1827) was an English poet, painter and printmaker. In his famous Illuminated Books, Blake combined painting, engraving, and poetry, some of which are now the most famous in the English language.

Episode 5 - J. M. W.Turner
J. M. W.Turner (1775-1851) was a British Romantic landscape painter, water-colourist, and printmaker. Turner was the best-known artist in England during the Romantic period and one of the forerunners of Impressionism.

Episode 6 - John Constable
John Constable (1776-1837) was an English Romantic painter. Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for his landscape paintings of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home.
