Inside the Medieval Mind
Inside the Medieval Mind is a BBC documentary series presented by Professor Robert Bartlett, investigating the intellectual landscape of the medieval world. The series consists of four episodes, each of which focuses on a different aspect of medieval thinking: "Knowledge", "Sex", "Belief", and "Power". During the series Professor Robert Bartlett visits numerous medieval locations, from Westminster Abbey to Pluscarden Abbey near Inverness, with wide use of readings from original medieval sources.
Episode 1 - Knowledge
This episode explores the way medieval man understood the world as a place of mystery, even enchantment - a book written by God.
Episode 2 - Sex
This episode unearths remarkable evidence of the complex passions of medieval men and women.
Episode 3 - Belief
This episode explores belief in the supernatural. The medieval dead shared the world with the living.
Episode 4 - Power
This episode looks at the brutal framework of the medieval class system. Inequality was a part of the natural order.
