Big Data: Hope or Hype?

"Big Data" is a term that has seen considerable media attention in the past year or two, heralding a new age of data-driven advances in the sciences, medicine, engineering, education, and more. In this talk we will take a step back and look at what is happening in big data: why the sudden interest in this topic? what kinds of computational and statistical methods are driving research and applications using big data? what kinds of problems can we expect to be realistically solved with big data? what might a data-driven future look like? In addressing these questions we will look at examples of large-scale data-driven solutions being used in both scientific research and in the commercial world, ranging from Web analytics to climate science.
