Great Continental Railway Journeys

Great Continental Railway Journeys is a BBC travel documentary series presented by Michael Portillo, traveling on the great train routes of Europe - featured in George Bradshaw's 1913 Continental Railway Guide. The series consists of five episodes that follow Michael Portillo around continental Europe, using George Bradshaw's 1913 Continental Railway Guide. Starting in London, Michael Portillo travels south to the Cote D'Azur, where he samples the Edwardian highlife; explores the once-great empire of Austria-Hungary; travels from Berlin to the Rheingau, passing the Harz Mountains; explores Switzerland; and travels from Amsterdam to the French sector of the Western Front before ending his journey at the spot where the 1918 armistice was signed.

Episode 1 - London to Monte Carlo


Episode 1 - London to Monte Carlo
Leaving London behind, armed with his 1913 railway guide, Michael Portillo follows the most popular route of the Edwardian traveller through France.

Episode 2 - Hungary to Austria
Steered by his 1913 railway guide, on this journey Michael Portillo explores the once-great empire of Austria-Hungary, domain of the famous Habsburg monarchs.

Episode 3 - Berlin to the Rhein
Michael begins this journey in Berlin, the capital of Germany, which at the beginning of the 20th century was a powerhouse of science and technology.

Episode 4 - Switzerland
Michael Portillo explores Switzerland. Michael’s journey begins in Basel and ends with a spectacular ascent by train to Europe's highest station, perched atop Switzerland's dramatic Jungfraujoch.

Episode 5 - Amsterdam to Northern France
After exploring the dazzling cities of the pre-war Low Countries, Michael Portillo travels to the French sector of the Western Front and ends his journey at the spot where the 1918 armistice was signed.
