Vision and the Eye

I-dentity. Identifying people is a fundamental skill and special areas of the brain are hard wired for recognising faces. Non-subjective artificial recognition of individuals has become increasingly important. The recent advent of computerisation for facial recognition can be used to identify a person on an image. More accurate identification can be obtained by analysis of the iris but this requires co-operation of the individual. Discrimination between people can also be undertaken remotely, by analysing their retinal images. Professor John Marshall from the Raynes Institute, St. Thomas' Hospital, will describe these new techniques and their controversial applications.

Professor William Ayliffe is Emeritus Professor of Physic at Gresham College and a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Lister Hospital in London. (from gresham.ac.uk)
