Journey of Life is a five-part BBC documentary series hosted by Steve Leonard, taking us on a 4 billion year journey from the first spark of life to the conquering of a planet. Life has evolved remarkable solutions to the challenge of survival. In this series, Steve Leonard takes us to the crucial moments in life's journey to dominate the earth. He travels back 3.8 billion years to when life began, exploring the oceans and tracing the story of life's origins from microbes to the the blue whale. He follows in the footsteps of the first pioneering animals to invade land, in an evolutionary journey that leads from a fish to a human. He discovers how living things first grew wings and how flying animals achieved the miracle of flight. Steve reveals how the relationships between living things can drive evolution itself - with some truly bizarre results. And on the last leg of his journey, Steve explores human evolution following in our ancestors' footsteps from chimp-like apes to modern humans.

Five million years ago we separated from our chimpanzee cousins. This episode follows in our ancestors' footsteps from chimp-like apes to modern humans.
