Introduction to Transportation Engineering

Introduction to Transportation Engineering. Instructors: Prof. Bhargab Maitra and Prof. K. S. Reddy, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Kharagpur. Transportation engineering is defined by the Institute of Transportation Engineer (ITE): Application of technology and scientific principles to the planning, functional design, operation and management of facilities for any mode of transportation in order to provide for the safe, rapid, comfortable, convenient, economical and environmentally compatible movement of people and goods. This course deals with topics in transportation engineering and road development process: modes of transportation, introduction to road development plans, elements of traffic engineering, highway alignment study, geometric design of intersections, pavement materials, pavement design and construction.
