5.111 Principles of Chemical Science

5.111 Principles of Chemical Science (Fall 2014, MIT OCW). Instructor: Professor Catherine Drennan. This course provides an introduction to the chemistry of biological, inorganic, and organic molecules. The emphasis is on basic principles of atomic and molecular electronic structure, thermodynamics, acid-base and redox equilibria, chemical kinetics, and catalysis. One year of high school chemistry is the expected background for this freshman-level course.

Lecture 01 - The Importance of Chemical Principles. Professor Cathy Drennan introduces this series of lectures about basic chemical principles. She describes her path to becoming a chemist and reveals her first impression of the discipline of chemistry. Goals for students of this material are presented as well as some examples about how real world problems can be solved through the applications of chemical principles. Teaching assistants for the course are introduced. (from ocw.mit.edu)
